Episode 9 – Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Richie breaks up with Arlene after a two week romance. He asks Fonzie for advice how he can get back together again. Fonzie recalls the movie A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and advises him to act like Brando in the famous “Steeeeeella!” scene. This does not work for Richie, needless to say.
(Episode 9 – Breaking Up is Hard to Do)

Richie asks Darlene if she is going to Jefferson High’s Teen Angel Prom. When she says yes, Richie offers her a lift. She accepts and they arrive together. Howard and Marion also attend as supervising chaperones. Howard spends most of his time removing couples from the broom closet, which is marked on a map of ‘make-out’ locations (2 mins 44 secs in the clip below).

Richie observes Arlene dancing with other boys. He naturally gets jealous. Eventually the two reunite as a couple. During the cleanup after the prom is over, Howard is left wondering how the punchbowl got ‘spiked’ (with alcohol) when he was guarding it most of the night.

In the scene when Fonzie and his date enter the prom, she tells Fonzie she’s going to speak to her friend Doris. Fonzie then says “I’ll tell you when you can go.” He pauses for a brief moment and adds “You can go.”

This is the exact same dialogue Sylvester Stallone’s character speaks to his on-screen girlfriend in the 1974 film THE LORDS OF FLATBUSH. This movie also starred Henry Winkler, who has been quoted as saying he based his performance of Fonzie on Stallone’s character in this film.

  1. It’s been a LONG time since I saw this series, so please clear this up for me: what is Fonzie doing at the high school dance?! I don’t recall any make-out locations in my school. We used to have “sock hops” now and then, and I hated them, of course. I would go outside and do gymnastics on the lawn. I was thinking that two weeks was a short time to go out and then break up with someone, but then when I thought about it more I realized that I got dumped at least twice after one date with two different guys. But this was later in life, college. I think I went out on maybe five dates total in high school !!! (It was an all girl school, for one thing, so we had to meet boys elsewhere in our lives).
  2. Same with me Stacey. I went to an all-boys High School so we also had to meet girls elsewhere – which a lot of us did with the greatest of determination (and strut). And yeah, good pick-up on the logic of the several years older motor mechanic Fonz having an ‘Access All Areas” pass to the High School Prom. I think the loophole was he was an ex-student of Jefferson High who had agreed to take on some light – very light – supervisory duties, while looking cool in the process.
  3. Oh, yeah….”light supervisory duties.” Kinda remember that now, hahaha Wordpress has gone wonky for me. It won’t let me “like” several bloggers… unless I sign in (which I already AM signed in). And like here while I’m commenting, it wants me to leave my name and email, which I already did…like years ago. Why does it keep asking me?! Driving me crazy crazy crazy.
    • I would never want my #1 CQ (Commenting Queen) to be given anything less than the red carpet treatment – and certainly never to be driven to the point of non com·pos men·tis. I reckon you’ve probably got enough technical challenges going in your 9-5. I’ve put this not-so-happy-days technical frustration device over my knee and given it a good spanking via settings. Don’t think it’ll be brave enough to ever raise it’s troublesome head again. If it does Stacey, please be kind enough to alert me. I will put any ‘making generous commentors jump thru unnecessary hoops’ palaga to the sword. Remember our discussion last week regarding SEO? I’ve managed now to get Microsoft’s BING search engine to recognize HAPPY DAYS: THE FIRST FIVE SEASONS. Still working on the big one – GOOGLE.

Got thoughts? Wanna share some? Do you know just how much I would enjoy that?
